With so much in my backpack important to me and my life on campus, it is no wonder that I can get apprehensive about it when it is not with me or in my line of sight. And that makes me wonder. I can be a little cynical of society.
It is not so much that I distrust anyone in particular, but I realize that a lot of trouble and hassle can come from one person who just doesn't care about others. It is not that I think that everyone is going to steal my backpack or its contents, but one person sure could. I did not think about it too much until I found myself leaving my things in the university library while going to the restroom last week.
I hurried along so that I could get back to my things, but in the process, I realized that perhaps I was not as distrustful as I thought I was. Admittedly, one of the reasons I left my things and backpack at a table while using the restroom instead of taking it all with me was laziness. I did not want to have to put everything in my backpack, lug it all to the restroom, only to have to set everything back up a few minutes later.
Yet, I found another reason to leave my things behind: the stranger across the table from me. I never said a word to the man. I don't even think we made eye contact. However, I had been sitting across him for over an hour, so in some strange way, I trusted him.
When I got back and everything was just as I left it, I mentally approved of the man who had "watched" my things. Again, I never said anything to him. I realized later that this strange relationship was reciprocal. When the man left his things on the table later that afternoon to leave the room, I mentally charged myself with the duty to make sure his things were safe. It was almost as if I was saying, "Don't worry, sir. You watched my stuff; I will watch your stuff.
The whole thing puzzles me. Even the thought of "long enough" puzzles me. Would I have trusted the stranger if I had only sat at the same table as him for half an hour? Would I be more inclined to leave my backpack for longer if we had sat in each other's presence for longer? I don't know. Maybe one day a psychologist or sociologist will answer my questions. In the meantime, I am bewildered by the general distrust I have of society, and yet the unusual trust I have of a stranger.

The fact is, many indie artists who define the sound no longer work independently.
Many are signed to major labels or to smaller labels that get bought up by the major labels. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with this.
It's a natural progression. Some artists like Chance The Rapper stay committed to the independent vision and release their own music, make their own art, and promote their own records.
It takes a lot of work, but this sort of trailblazing independence is what makes indie so popular and influential. As indie music becomes more successful, it becomes more influential. Other artists and musicians listen to the popular indie bands of the day, become inspired, and create music that pays tribute to the indie music tradition.
But the term indie is contentious. If an indie artist is no longer independent, can it still be said that they make indie music?
If it has the indie sound, is that a good enough reason to call it indie music? The truth is, a lot of indie rock could also be considered alternative rock, and as indie rock becomes popular, it becomes a part of the alternative genre. Indie music is interesting because it's always evolving and always influencing mainstream music.
It's hard to discern exactly where the history of indie music begins. Generally, people talk about indie music originating in the United States and the UK in the s. There is a long list of artists from the 60s and earlier who've had a lasting impact on indie music. These artists directly inspired the artists in the s at the forefront of the indie scene, and their influence can still be felt.
The Beatles inspired indie music not just in sound, but in attitude as well. The Beatles were one of the first popular bands to take full control of their sound and make album orientated music. They were socially and politically conscious and were pioneers of new recording methods.
The Beach Boys had a similar effect on indie music. Their legendary album Pet Sounds had intricate production that inspired artists like Grizzly Bear today. Nick Drake was less commercially successful, but still influential. The Clash were an English rock band formed in that led directly to post-punk — one of the first truly indie genres.
They fused genres like reggae, dub, funk, ska, and rockabilly and inspired a generation of musicians to come. These pre-indie legends allowed later musicians to push their genres to the limits.
Channeling independence and a disregard for invention brought music to where it is today. The Buzzcocks, a band from Manchester, released an EP independently of a major label and coined the term indie.
By the mids, the term indie was being used to describe the sound of bands on post-punk labels. A couple of key bands to define the sound of indie music in the s were The Smiths and R. Even though they were independent of a major label, they ended up achieving mainstream success including a number-one album called Meat Is Murder.
The Smiths inspired bands like Oasis, the Libertines, and their influence can almost certainly be traced to any artful young guitar band, especially in the UK. Scalco decided to pack his bags and head for the West Coast, where he landed in Burbank, California.
Scalco quickly found himself playing in a rock band, working on national commercials, hit television shows and major motion pictures with bit parts and Under5s, but always dreamed of bigger and better things. Dissatisfied with the direction his acting and music careers were headed, J. Scalco took a long break. After some pretty well established internships with major companies, J.
