How old is maitland mcconnell
You may like to refresh your memory of some of them. But let me take you back to some of the issues i had when i began. Most of them are still relevant. Maybe i was influenced by my own name. Obviously other things were involved in identifying Port Phillip orphans. I looked at their place of origin, their age, the address of their employer, if their shipmates witnessed their wedding and the birth of their children, that kind of thing.
How many of these could i line up? Here are a couple of my research cards when i was working with Victorian vital statistics. I still believe i achieved a high degree of accuracy for the Victorian orphans especially in the first volume of Barefoot and Pregnant?
Presumably in working back through your own family history the level of certainty increases. A direct ancestral line may convince you that is all you need. But does that mean you should have no doubts at all? The sheer number of Irish women arriving in Port Phillip as assisted immigrants during the s may be problematic.
Even when they wrote down a definite date, that was just a guess. Or constructs a new identity for herself? Or adopts an alias to escape from the law?
Now our orphan has become more elusive, raising questions and leaving us with more and more room for error. She is slipping through our fingers. Sometimes we just do not have the certainty or evidence we would like. In the end, it is up to us to be honest with ourselves. Lately a number of people have approached me for help finding out more about the Irish background of their orphan.
Margaret was to marry fellow Irishman Daniel Corbett shortly after arriving, and together they had ten children. She died aged 36 or 37, a month after the birth of her last child, a little boy called Thomas. From the family reconstitution form below Margaret is listed as having come from Limerick—Tipperary, reflecting what was stated at the registration of the birth of some of her children.
In the excerpt from the database, and indeed on the New Liverpool shipping list, her place of origin is Clonmel, Tipperary. Note the reference to Clonmel Board of Guardian record s. This is one of the many workhouse records held in Irish repositories. Even if Peter no longer gives details of what sources have survived, his site is still a mine of information. If you are thinking of making a trip to Ireland one day, make sure you find where the records are stored, and write to the relevant library beforehand.
Clonmel Board of Guardian Minute books are exceptional in that they include the names of famine orphans who came to Australia. That is rarely the case elsewhere. Number 28 on this list Ellen Fraher is the person to make up the twenty-eighth emigrant to go. Her certificate has already been sent amongst the thirty two. I now send a certificate for Mary Murphy to replace that of Mary Farrell the latter having declined to go and Mary Murphy being now sent in her place.
The general certificate of health will be taken tomorrow by the Ward Master in charge. The six marked with an asterisk had smallpox. The rest were vaccinated. Thomas Scully, Medical Officer. Maybe she was born in Clonmel St.
But alas the baptismal records that survived for this parish begin in Or try contacting a local historical society to see if anyone might help.
That workhouse. That is enough for now. Btw, The featured image of this post is the cover of The Great Famine.
The scandal surrounding the Subraon is not well known. However, if you take the trouble to read the very thorough enquiry of the Sydney Immigration Board you will understand more clearly how they would react to the furore associated with arrival of the first official Orphan vessel, the Earl Grey.
Have a look at the extracts below. The Minutes of the Sydney Immigration Board…re the irregularities aboard the Subraon , printed for the use of the Government only in , comprises sixty pages, lines per page, of small print. The Board consisted of Francis L. Merewether Esq. Browne Esq, Water Police Magistrate, names many readers of my blog will know.
We even meet Thomas MaGrath, an immigrant who was schoolmaster on board the Subraon , pp. Alicia Ashbridge was more frequently drunk than any of the girls.
Dorcas Newman was improperly intimate withe Mate. Acret was the Surgeon-Superintendent on the Subraon. Later that year, 26 October, the Subraon was wrecked at the entrance to Wellington Harbour. It would be a very different matter when the Earl Grey and Surgeon Douglass arrived early in October Incidentally, information on the Subraon follows at pp.
I provided the wrong date for the Sydney Morning Herald SMH editorial defending Douglass, and the neighbouring column mentioning his appeal to have land restored to him. It should be August not April See SMH 16 August , page 2. Many of the Workhouse Board of Guardian Minute Books have survived for the period we are interested in viz At present, they are held in the local Archives of each county.
It is best always to get in touch beforehand and tell the archivist your particular interest. You have to arrange a prior appointment here. Again, may I suggest getting in touch before you visit. If in doubt about what records have survived, your first call should be the wonderful website of Peter Higginbotham, www. The Minute Books help us put the orphans into historical context. In this same volume, for example, page 27, 1 March , we learn of the diet for able-bodied inmates.
Indian and oat meal used in equal proportions. The Medical Officer, Dr Babington was also asked to provide the emigrants with a medical certificate stating they were healthy. The same page also gives the names of twelve young women from Coleraine workhouse who would travel on the Roman Emperor to South Australia. It is always worth looking at the original sources.
She writes,. Finding all these children and following them through was no easy task…Their first four children were all born pre which is when civil registration began in New South Wales, therefore births were not registered but luckily they did have them all baptised. I started with the microfilm of the Church of England, Newcastle Diocese registers. I thought I had struck the jackpot as I found them all one after the other right down to the last child, George Silvester Ashton being baptised on 20 June I then thought it would be an easy task to look for any deaths and or their marriages.
Again I learnt that nothing is as it appears to be. As I have already mentioned, the first four children were baptisms only, therefore they are listed as Ashton, naming both mother and father. So we have a family, on paper, where some are under the name of Ashton and the rest are under the name of McConnell, then not to make it any easier, they all got married under the name of Ashton.
Sometime during her life she learned to read and write. She was recorded as being unable to do either when she left Belfast workhouse but could do both, according to her gaol description of She was only c. We may not have the same resources as Alison Light, census records, for example, that throw light on their neighbours but there are some things we could, and should explore. These examples are not the end of it. May I urge family historians to try setting their Irish Famine orphan in a particular historical context.
Even if you do not have a direct link to a particular thing, your curiosity will carry you along. What was the difference in weather like for young Mary McConnell Ashton?
Was she aware of Aboriginal people? Was her life experience very different from ours? How did she travel? What were conditions like on a tenant farm in the Hunter Valley? What work did a sawyer do? Mary was a washerwoman and sometimes acted as a midwife.
What did that entail in the second half of the nineteenth century? These are a few of the things I try to do here. Each case will be slightly different. How did this young woman from Belfast feel about the weather in her first summer in Australia?
She probably loved the warm sun on her back as she went about her household chores. She may also have looked up, and longed for a wet Belfast sky. Other Irish migrants recorded how they felt. David Fitzpatrick, Oceans of Consolation, p. But it was still shocking to young Michael Normile from County Clare who wrote from Lochinvar in ,. The winter is coming on with us now it is beautiful weather the same as home summer.
The summer we past was dreadful hot…I heard that some people got sun struck, in fact I was a day and I would give a mouthfull of money for a mouthfull of fresh air…I Seen this last Summer 4 months without a drop of rain and all that time hot scorching weather.
Fitzpatrick, Oceans, pp. May I suggest, too, that instead of writing Aboriginal people out of our history, we make every effort to write them in?
Aboriginal history is flourishing. Click to access brayshaw The number of Aboriginal people had fallen drastically since the beginning of the century: none was reported as coming to Maitland for blankets in , for example.
Or on neighbouring estates. See the link to the history of Aboriginal Sydney above. Mary was about centimetres tall, William Our ancestors were smaller than we are. Their life expectancy was shorter, their families were larger, they had fewer material possessions, fewer labour-saving devices and most of them had a lifetime of hard physical work.
